How to use the GSS web site
(courtesy of Alan Agresti and Chris Franklin)
• Go to the GSS website: http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/GSS/
• On the left, under "codebook" click on "mnemonic" to see a (very long)
list of variables. Each variable is a response to a question and clicking
on the variable shows you the question. There are also demographic
variables (age, income, gender). The list is very long and each letter
of the alphabet has one page of variable names.
• Choose two variables to analyze.
• Click on the Analyze tab on the homepage of GSS.
• In teh "select an action" menu, enter a dot to request the "frequencies
and crosstabulation" option and click START.
• Where prompted, type in your variable names. You can also select particular
years of data, but be careful since not all questions were asked all years.
• Put a check in the appropriate boxes to get column and/or row percents.
Click Run The Table.
